KMC Program at Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center In Partnership with PAP and Manila LGU

In a memorandum of agreement signed and dated November 2011, three (3) institutions agreed to adopt the Kangaroo Mother Care Program (KMC) at Gat Andres Memorial Medical Center in Tondo Manila. City of Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Perinatal Association of the Philippines’ President, Dr. Ma. Cecilia O. Tolentino and Bless-Tetada Kangaroo Mother Care Foundation President, Dr. Socorro DL. Mendoza. Implementation of the agreement started with the KMC training of a core group of healthcare professionals at Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center from January 16 to 20, 2012.

The 5 day intensive training of the Gat Andres KMC core team was held at the conference room of the annex building of Gat Andress Hospital in Tondo, Manila. Daily sessions started at 8:00 am and ended at 5:00 pm. The Gat Andress KMC core team is composed of the following medical doctors, nurses, and social workers:

Logistics for the conduct of the training was shouldered by the Perinatal Association of the Philippines (PAP), ably represented by its President, Dr. Ma. Cecilia Tolentino, who was present all throughout the 5-day course. On the second day of training, the immediate past president of PAP, Dr. Maria Theresa Guese-Cacas, attended the morning session and expressed the PAP’s full support of the KMC program at Gat Andres over the next 3 years in coordination with the KMC Foundation.

Lectures on the KMC technique, applied in hands-on workshops in the newborn unit as well as in the rooming-in wards were conducted by KMC experts from the Foundation and the Dr. Jose Fabella KMC core team. Each day was ended with a values-enhancement session conducted by Ms. Merle Pimentel of the Brahma Kumaris Foundation Phil., Inc. Ms. Guerrero, KMC Foundation Board Secretary, conducted sessions on proper documentation of the program with provision of standard KMC forms that KMC programs utilize. In the last day of the seminar, a planning workshop and presentation of plans for KMC program implementation at Gat Andres Bonifacio Hospital was completed. Course evaluation and simple graduation rites ended the 5-day training.
